A compendium of neuroses for the ear, "Neurotika" is an attempt to catalog and classify the aural oddities and sonic psychoses of modern existence. There are rare occasions in life, often overlooked, when the unlikely convergence of certain dissimilar sounds seems for one fleeting moment to form a greater whole: a strangely calming harmony of noise. These events have a soothing effect distinct from the traditional "escape" from noise, in that they allow us to cope with, rather than deny, the sonic bombardment of modern city life. Neurotika was conceived in order to record such unique transitional events and incorporate them into cohesive compositions. Its curators are Max Springer, Benzene and Marcello Radulovich.
"Grist" began with a source recording of radio frequencies also used in John Duncan's "Incoming". The wave effect is the result of modulating the sound with the amplitude envelope of another sound: waves on the beach. The amplitude of several other sounds were used to add a subtle complexity, including the crowd noise from a football match. An ode to the so-called 'King of Pop' in all his troubled glory, "Thriller" contains thoughts from the man himself, as well as commentary from Louis Farrakhan. Jackson's own words were digitally contorted into the accompaniment. A "Distraction Device" could be many things: some sleight of hand, a change of subject, a simple diversion. To the Drug Enforcement Agency, it is a bomb. The war on drugs is only one battle in the war on information.
