I N C O M I N G

John Duncan is an American artist who has worked extensively in Japan and Europe. Known for his noise-oriented audio work and confrontational performances (a "stress chamber" in which stripped-naked volunteers are subjected to the sound of phased motors resonating in total darkness), Duncan is no stranger to collaboration: his previous releases include "Contact" with Andrew McKenzie.

Max Springer is a multimedia artist with a background in computer music and design. Known for his unique digital sound design work and colorful symbolic paintings (see "Max Springer CD-ROM"), Springer's collaborative works include "Neurotika" with Benzene.

With a mutual interest in sonic experimentation, the two began work on "Incoming" in 1992. Duncan provided the source tapes for the composition, consisting of industrial recordings, ambient location sessions, and other "found" sounds. Springer engineered the cumputer sequences involved, which were specifically designed for integration wirh the tapes. This was John's first foray into the realm of digital sound, and his history with analog instrumentation gave him strong reservations about some of the processes involved. Of particular concern was the fact that the recording and early editing were performed using analog techniques. In order to ensure consistency, both the source recordings and the computer sequences were meticulously analyzed using Fourier Transformations: this allowed for a direct visual comparison between the two.
