Symbolism

Max Springer

Symbols are my work. Symbol systems, such as those explored by C. G. Jung and Joseph Campbell have afforded me invaluable perspective on how the use of symbolism surpasses words. Complete and multiple realities are opened with these systems. Much of my art utilizes unconscious but familiar symbols, which coupled with explorations into the "dark" side of humanity, cause a deeper personal awareness when viewed.

Robert Bly, the American poet, writes about a bag that we all carry behind us -- the bag in which we hide all of our suppressed thoughts and actions. It can get so large and so full that it can throw us off-balance. When it isn't opened, it can create so much havoc that the person carrying it cannot function well in the light or the dark world. Much of my work is about that dark side of human nature -- the deep shadows of the light side.

I believe it is time to express with sensitivity humanity's dark side, circumventing its covert and therefore, its destructive expression. These embedded, important dreams will help the balance in ourselves as well as in nature.
